Every month, our practice is growing and we welcome new clients anytime. All of our staff are passionate about horses, equine welfare and equestrian sport.   Kessock Equine Vets was formed in January 2004 and we have grown to employ four full-time vets and one part time veterinary surgeon. Our purpose built equine clinic was completed in June 2007 and we provide the areas only 24-hour equine-only service with in-patient facilities as well as our very popular mobile service throughout the central Highlands and Moray.  Our vets only treat horses, so you can be assured of that extra level of expertise and knowledge that comes with working with horses 100% of the time!

We are holding our first winter client evening on the 1st February with a lecture from Professor Josh Slater of the Royal Veterinary College in London.  Please note the change of date; call and book your place now - places are limited to 150 people!

LATEST NEWS

First cases of fatal muscle disease reported in the Highlands

Two youngsters have been lost in December 2009 to atypical myoglobinuria, a serious and usually fatal muscle disease of grazing horses; there was an additional case in October 2009 too. The signs of this disease include weakness, collapse and dark urine. There have been hundreds of cases reported throughout Western Europe this autumn and it usually occurs after a wet period; prevention advice includes providing shelter and supplementary feeding to grazing horses. Further information can be found at www.myopathieatypique.be/ or call us for further information.

Winter Health Campaigns

Have your horse checked for liver disease.  A simple blood test can help tell if your horse has liver damage or ragwort poisoning, don't leave it too late.  A liver check test costs as little as £12.50 and this can often rule out liver disease caused by Ragwort poisoning.

Elderly horse checks - a detailed examination with your elderly pony or horse including a blood test costs only £69.  The examination is the equivalent of a two-stage vetting and we then check internal organ function and a blood count at the lab all for only £69, excluding your normal visit fee - or take advantage of our zone visit scheme to save even more!

Training Courses

All of our veterinary staff attend continuing education to keep abreast of the latest developments in equine medicine.  Chris attended an advanced radiology course in London and Louise recently completed her FEI course earlier this summer.  Caroline and Louise attended the BEVA conference in Birmingham in September and Keith presented a lecture on eye disease there. Keith attended the London Vet conference in November and we also attended a horse rescue course in October.

AI success

We've finally finished our breeding season with the last of our mares being served today (20th August 2009).  Many foals have been born in the Highlands this year to artificial insemination and if you are interested in breeding your mare in 2010, please call or come in for a chat.

Don’t forget we offer Clipping and Trimming service whereby you can bring your horse in to the clinic to be sedated and trimmed up ready for shows. Please call our office for more information.
